JINLING: How a Hunan Firm

Breaks the Price Monopoly of 5-Axis Machine Tools

Recently, a research group from the Hunan Center of China Industry News Institute conducted an on-site survey at Hunan Jinling Machine Tool Technology Group Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Jinling Machine Tools), to learn about the technical breakthroughs and market layout of this nearly 70-year-old established enterprise in high-end 5-axis machining centers. Zhang Junyu, General Manager of Jinling Machine Tools, accompanied the survey.

Formerly known as Changsha No.2 Machine Tool Works, JILLING completed state-owned enterprise restructuring in 2003 and was acquired by Puhler Group in 2015. It is a national high-tech enterprise and a key cultivated equipment manufacturer under Hunan’s "Three Highs and Four News" strategy. The company now employs over 200 staff, with an annual output value of about 230 million yuan and a plant area of more than 100 mu, serving over 2,000 clients in total. It holds more than 200 authorized intellectual property rights, including 30 invention patents, 121 utility model patents and 41 software copyrights.

During the survey, Zhang Junyu gave a detailed introduction to its core product, the HUC series 5-axis gantry machining center with overhead traveling ram. Designed for aerospace, new energy vehicles, precision molds and other industries, the equipment delivers high-speed and high-precision machining of complex components.

According to introduction, similar imported equipment was previously priced at 7 to 8 million yuan or even over 10 million yuan, with purchase restrictions imposed on Chinese enterprises. JILLING has been developing 5-axis technology since 2017. At present, its equipment with equivalent performance is priced at only 1 to 2 million yuan, forcing imported brands to slash their prices significantly.

“The significance of domestic substitution is not to pursue high profits, but to break the high pricing of imported products,” said Zhang Junyu.

In terms of technical parameters, the HUC series features a positioning accuracy within 5 microns and a repetitive positioning accuracy of 2 microns, approximately one-seventieth of the diameter of a human hair. Adopting full closed-loop control, the equipment is equipped with self-developed core rotary tables, while its CNC system is independently developed by JILLING Software, a joint venture between JILLING and Central South University. The company invests 10% of its annual profits in R&D, committed to achieving technological breakthroughs in the high-end CNC field.

"On average, six out of every ten machines in Hunan’s construction machinery industry are processed on our machine tools," Zhang Junyu told the research team. Such a high supporting ratio enables in-depth cooperation between JILLING and leading local enterprises in Hunan.

For market competition, JILLING adopts a differentiated strategy: it shuns the small-size machine tool market plagued by price wars and focuses on large-size, high value-added products. Zhang Junyu also disclosed that a leading domestic humanoid robot enterprise has established cooperation with JILLING. "Growing demand for high-end CNC machine tools from humanoid robots, new energy vehicles, low-altitude economy and other sectors opens vast room for JILLING’s development."

Liu Huake, Chief Consultant of the Hunan Center of China Industry News Institute, commented that JILLING has achieved core technological breakthroughs in high-end 5-axis equipment and greatly driven down prices of imported counterparts, demonstrating the competitiveness of domestic manufacturing equipment. The Hunan Center will keep tracking and supporting outstanding Hunan enterprises like JILLING, helping them pursue higher-quality development through technological innovation, brand building and market expansion.(Reporter: Liu Yanjun)
